The Wool Industry in the Riverina

This is one of the important wool producing regions particularly across drier western and southern areas.  From Wagga Wagga to the wider Riverina plans there has been a long association with Merino sheep.  They can graze large areas of relatively low rainfall country and product a valuable fleece.

In the broader  Riverina and Murray regions wool was worth $103m in 2020-2021, 3.5% of the regions total agricultural production.  In today’s sheep enterprise farmers may select sheep for a combination of wool, growth, fertility and meat production not just wool alone. Technology allows electronic identification to improve breeding decisions and genetic gains in both wool and carcass.  

Wool production remains an important part of the agricultural identity and economy.
